If:
A laser alignment light cost $2,000 when purchased with your saw,
the maintenance cost (realigning once per month – ½ hr.) is $240 per year,
you financed it for 5 years at 10% interest, and
if the useful life is 5 years . . .

Then:
That laser alignment light cost you $750 a year for 5 years, $63 per month, $5 per day, and if you use it 6 hours per day then it cost $0.86 per hour. You can easily see that it will net you $11 per day. If you apply $16 per working day toward the payment of your loan then the laser alignment light will pay for itself in just over 6 months.

$16 X 21 (number of working days per month) = $336 per month

I cannot emphasize enough how important this payback analysis can be. I know of fabricators who rush out and buy all the latest machinery, only to find it raises their overhead costs to unacceptable levels. On the other hand, I also know of fabricators who really need to move up to more efficient equipment. This is especially true of shops who are very busy and are backed up with work.
