A number of choices to filter through – For the health of the environment and your machinery, water filtration systems are key to any stone or quartz surfacing fabrication operation. Technology in this area continues to evolve and there are several suppliers of clean water systems that can offer a variety of products. We put out a call to industry suppliers and have neatly packaged the information they provided here for your perusal.

The MicroKlean filter press, from ALAR’s Water Recycling Division, has been designed for easy operation. The ALAR MicroKlean is an expandable plate-n-frame filter that removes solids from stone fabrication wastewater and produces landfill ready solids with ultra-clean water. The carbon steel construction can hold up to any stone slurry. The ALAR Micro-Klean includes a fully automatic open/close hydraulic ram along with a forklift-accessible solids dumpster. The company can design a complete recycling system or just a filter and its engineers can retrofit a filter to existing systems to suit many needs.

Beckart Filter Press Systems, from Beckart Environmental, use 100 percent recycling/reuse of process wastewater. The systems reportedly reduce waste cost through elimination of haul-off and sewer charges. Systems are expandable for business growth, and are designed for flow rates of 10 to 200 GPM. The systems are PLC-controlled with flow measuring, monitoring and graphic display.

Fabricator’s Choice offers a fully automated water filtration system. The Eich Water Treatment System is an environmentally friendly unit with no added holding tanks, floor pits, standard system filters or chemicals required. The cartridge cleans spindle water to save on tool wear. Water exchange is preset before pH and natural residues become too high for disposal. This design works as a stand-alone unit or can be integrated with your existing equipment for added production capability. The system is self-cleaning during off hours.

Fraccaroli and Balzan (F&B) manufacture a solids separator for the stone industry. The units are capable of separating stone particulate from the water used in many different stone processing applications. Reclaiming and recycling process water will greatly cut production costs to any operation, reports the company. The units employ a combination of low-cost flocculent and simple mechanical filter press to provide “clean” water that can be recycled back to the workstations. They are available in 17 ft. overall height (model FB/2000V-WD-CS) and 13 ft. overall height (model FB/2000V-WD-CF.)

Diarex Cyclone Water Filtration Systems from GranQuartz offer water filtration by design. You select the filtration system that provides the right cleanliness level for your equipment. Cyclone Water Filtration systems are modular with various levels of water filtration. Cyclones use centrifugal technology to remove solids and provide water suitable for hand tools and bridge saws at a low cost reports the company. Add-on Hurricane filter systems are designed to remove smaller solids to provide crystal clear water for edge machines or CNC spindles.

The DEP-250 Water Reclamation Unit, from Marmo Machinery USA, is a self-contained system that will allow fabricators to reuse water from existing operations and reduce exposure from mandated EPA regulations. The unit is made with galvanized steel and reclaims 250 liters or just over 66 gal. per min. This system deals with water sludge separation by using liquid flocculent and gravity. The sludge will then be extracted and dehydrated through a series of filtering bags. Once full, the bags can be easily disposed of.

The SC line of automatic self-cleaning filters, from Schroeder Industries, is designed to serve as part of a complete filtration system. The line can achieve high flow rates with ANSI flange sizes ranging from 2 to 36 in. Removal of contamination particles occurs with slotted tube filter elements ranging from 50 to 3,000 microns and Super Mesh Filter Elements with 25 to 40 microns. Because of the single-element cleaning process, the total filtered flow is not reduced during the cleaning process. The filters are available from the smallest SC02 up to a high-capacity SC36. The SC02 filter can handle up to 120 gal. per min. of water or low-viscosity fluids. The SC04-SC08 can filter up to 1,980 gal. per min., and the SC10-SC36 can take on 33,000 gal. per min.
