Design Show Delivers Excellence
Drum roll, please!

The second annual Surface Fabrication Achievement in Design Contest was held in conjunction with the 2009 Surface Fabrication and Design Expo. The show hosted the contest in February in Orlando. The 2009 competition featured 28 innovative designs in a number of materials and functions.

The contest was judged by a panel of experts on creativity and beauty of design, quality of execution and innovative use of materials. One winner was selected in each of six categories, including the newest addition of “Best Green Application.” Additionally, a best in show was chosen for both the large and small application classes of entries.

The following is a list of the winning entries from the 2009 design competition and a description of their projects.

Best Residential Bath
Artist: Dave Drees

Title: Anti-Grav Lav
This residential bath design creates a bold design statement utilizing massive mirror-imaged arches as a foundation, topped by an illuminated vanity bowl that appears suspended over the arches. Materials used for the fabrication include: Polished Buried Beach; Glacier White, Corian Illumination Series; and stainless steel support rods.

Best Residential Kitchen
Artist: Gene McDonald
Company/Sponsor: Refresh Interiors Inc.
Title: Chocolate PaperStone/Bamboo Inlay
This unique kitchen design features two corner seams. The line of PaperStone was rabbeted to inlay the bamboo to match the cabinetry. PaperStone is 100-percent recycled and the bamboo is a featured renewable resource in this design.

Best Freestyle/Art Large, Best In Show Large Application
Artists: Michael Morris and Yoshiko Sato
Company/Sponsor: DuPont
Title: LightShowers II Exhibit
LightShowers designed by Michael Morris and Yoshiko Sato, Morris Sato Studio, with video images by Paul Ryan, was originally conceived for and presented at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts in Wilmington, Del., and has since traveled to Lucas Schoormans Gallery, New York City; ICFF 2007, New York City; Gwangju Design Biennale 2007, Gwangju, Korea; and Design Miami 2007, Miami. In addition to the 2008 ICFF presentation, LightShowers II, which incorporates music and sound design by Michael Sneary, was presented at the Seoul International Media Arts Biennale in September 2008 in Seoul, Korea. The exhibit was fabricated by Sterling Surfaces.

Best Freestyle/Art Small, Best In Show Small Application

Project Name: Reading Lamp “Snatch”
This piece was designed to be optically appealing, compact and as simple as possible. The integrated hot plate shapes the lower part of the lamp, where an additional power supply unit can be installed. Upward, the shape is reduced and ends in a small lamp head. The closed shape hides the technics inside. Considered as a whole, the shape is meant to reminisce of an erected cobra.

Best Green Application

Title: The Green Throne
This winning entry is a toilet cover for a duel flush toilet. Its base is made with PaperStone. The designs of Save Water are inlayed with Luminstone crumbles (lumi-crunch), which was contributed by Sterling Surfaces. The other Adhesa-crunch is outdated glue with mirror chips to make the toilet seat glow.

Title: Senior Spot Bench — Choate Rosemary Hall
This 131-ft. bench fabricated from Corian solid surface was a senior class gift from the 2008 class of Choate Rosemary Hall Preparatory School in Wallingsford, Conn. In this unique bench, donor names were inlayed with 7,000 glow-in-the-dark letters out of lumistone solid surface.
