Would you look at that?! It’s already that time, once again, when we at Surface Fabrication magazine, would like to ask fabricators like you to show off your best, and offer you an opportunity to be featured in our annual contest demonstrating the endless possibilities of design in fabrication.

Last year, Surface Fabrication magazine and Surface Fabrication & Design Expo came together to recognize the skills of fabricators and feature the artistic and real-world possibilities of solid surface, stone and quartz surfacing/e-stone.

The 2009 Surface Fabrication Achievement In Design Contest is the second annual design contest to combine the pre-existing contests of Surface Fabrication magazine and Surface Fabrication & Design Expo into one complete contest. This year, we’re shaking things up again. The 2009 design contest will now be separated into three classes: small applications, large application and a new Green category.

The Green Class will be awarded for a project that best exemplifies the use of a recycled or otherwise environmentally friendly surfacing material, whether in a large or small application. All entries in this category should include information on what qualifies the project as environmentally friendly and what makes it different from similar projects that would not be considered green. The Green Class entry will be eligible for the best of show award in whichever application category it is entered.

The four award categories for the 2009 small applications class will again include: edge treatments, inlays, integral sink/drainboard and freestyle/art (small). In addition, a Best in Class will be chosen from among the small application winners. The small applications class will consist of physical entries, submitted for judging and displayed at the 2009 Surface Fabrication & Design Expo in Orlando. Entries must be at the show no later than February 19, 2009.

There will again be four award categories for the 2009 large applications class to include: residential kitchens, residential baths, commercial/institutional and freestyle/art (large). A Best in Class will be chosen from among the large application winners. The large applications class will consist of high-resolution, digital photo entries to be submitted for judging, as well as information on the project being judged. Cygnus Business Media will enlarge and print the digital entries to display at the 2009 Surface Fabrication & Design Expo in Orlando. Photos and complete project information for the large applications category must be submitted along with the application.

Entries will be judged upon creativity and beauty of design, quality of execution and innovative use of materials. Winners will be recognized with an award and news releases.

The winning entries will be chosen by a panel of experts at the 2009 Surface Fabrication & Design Expo on February 19, 2009. Winning entries will be featured in a future issue of Surface Fabrication magazine, and also be submitted for possible articles in Kitchen & Bath Design News and Wood Digest; as well as appear on the Design Contest Web site, Surface Fabrication magazine’s Web site and Surface Fabrication & Design Expo’s Web site.

The deadline to submit an “Application to Compete” form is December 22, 2008. Projects considered for the 2009 Surface Fabrication Achievement in Design Contest must have been completed between March 2008 and February 2009. Entry of a single project under more than one category is not permitted.

Complete contest information, along with contest deadlines and shipping information, can be found on the contest Web site, www.surfacefabricationdesigncontest.com, where interested parties will be able to download complete contest registration packets. More information is also available by phone at 800-827-8009 or by e-mail at Sara.Lawrence@CygnusExpos.com or editor@surfacefabrication.com.
