Lined up a job today that will have a one piece Silestone island. 48'' X 96'' with a slide in range centered on one(96'') side. My concern is the stability of this thing for installing. Should I have the fabricators drill the corners and score the cut lines so that I can do the cutout after install or is Quartz strong enough to carry in with the cutout missing. Kinda scares me to think about carrying a big C into the house.

I know doing the cutout inside will be a mess but it beats breaking the top.

Any experience with this would be appreciated.

Chris:

I would have them cut out all but 3" or so at the edge.

Clamp a 14' 2x6 to that bad boy and carry 'er in the house and set 'er down on flat cabinets. Line up the cut out and while your helper squirts some water spray, clip the two 3" lines to complete the cutout. Very little mess.

If you're cutting by yourself, hot melt some blocking on the stationary side overhang beneath each cut. If you cut into but not through the blocking, it will keep the piece from falling.

It ain't gonna break.

Thanks Joe,

This will be my first Quartz and I wasn't sure about how it compared to stone. I like what I have heard though. I'll use a bubba brace, should be fine.

Thanks for the tip on using hot melt and blocks to support a drop. I think I may get some mileage out of that.
