View Full Version : Hi-Macs
A question was asked on "another site" about what the volcanics were made of. Mention was made of experiments to perform. I'm curious what experiments were performed and what the results were. I have my own ideas about this stuff, but I'd like to know what others have heard.

Like I mentioned on the other post, just make your email appear and I will get you the results of the experiement.

Hi Todd,
Andy and KC are good friends of mine. I proposed an experiment to answer a question, setlle a bet and maybe get to drink some lite Guangdong beer in the process. The experiment is between Andy and KC and me. If they would like to reveal nature of that, I have no qualms or trepidations about it. But as a consultant I have many secrets and possess proprietary information from many companies (sometimes when I walk into a room, I have to m ]ake a mental check list of what not speak about so as not to betry confidences, I take that stuff seriously, cursed with morals and all that. No biggie. If Andy and KC would like to reveal the nature and details of said experiment and its outcome, its fine with me, but I feel the details were to them.
But if you have a particular question I will answer it to the best of my ability provided it does not compromise my clients. If your are not a client, all bets are off....heh heh, IM gonna tattle and sing like a canary.

I was just curious.
It seems to me the volcanics series are acrylic with polyester chunks (the translucent chunks). "They" say not to thermoform it so I suspect it contains polyester, but I have thermoformed it into large radii so I don't think it's a blend. I haven't tried a tighter radius but I suspect the polyester chunks may separate from the acrylic. Just a theory.
I wouldn't want anyone to divulge any propriatary information.

Lenny,
Your confidential experiment is cood with me. I have not sent the experiment to anyone nor will I. I have not tried the experiement yet, but I am going to.
Thanks for your confidence,
Andy

I have tried thermal forming to a three inch outside radius and it did not work, the particulates pulled away. But I am not done, I want to continue to experiment and see how tight of a radius we can form. On this job we cut the radius pieces on the CNC and did a face to face build up and it worked out fine.

Hi all,
some early resul;ts in on the Mr Wizard style experiemt. Hmmm, looks interesting. Waiting to hear from the rest of you on your findings. If you would like to release the findings here (You heard it at Geeks type of thing), I have no qualms about it.
Gotta run, got a dinner/meeting. See ya later.
Regards,
Lenny
Talked with my "Avonite" source today.. We were talking about my first job with Volcanics series. He said how strange, he just got off the phone with his boss, and he was saying "Avonite is introducing a line similar to the Volcanic series, except theirs is going to be 100% acylic, unlike HiMacs that contains polyesters.
They will have more colors.
I bet Lenny already knew that.....
Competition is GREAT!!! Keep that new stuff coming!!!!

Ah,
So Avonite is introducing a Volcanics Series hmmmm. The design leaders in the industry have sunk to knock offs. My My if the rumor is true , Hi MAcs should be honored. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. If the rumor is true, I guess that will made in Florence Kentucky at the Aristech Acrylics plant.
I stumbled accross a bit of proprietary info over here about the LG formulation. Cant divulge, Im not suppossed to know. But I wonder if Avonite will incorporate that twist. (its not the polyester theory, its something else)
While we are on the subject of rumors I heard a bizarre one from a contact in the middle east. Seems they got some material from the Big C, from the big M plant down in my neck of the woods, and while routing and sanding from the smell and other attributes thought it was polyester. Anybody encountered this situation in the good ole U S of A? Just curious, Id love to know.
Anyway Im waiting to hear back on all the experiments people are doing on the Volcanics. It is some nice looking material, I like it.

Lenny

Lenny,
From what I've heard, both Acrylic and Polyester products are available from Montelli.
Len
From my sources what Avonite is working on is the next generation of Solid Surface not a copy of someone elses. I have been told Volcanics is a polyester matreial like Avonites studio collection. Simplicity is a polyester material im not sure if the montelli plant is also producing acrylic or not.
How does one post as "GUEST"?? I thought guest could only read and not post?
Not that your comments are not welcomed, this site is all about communication, another BB has had problems with unidentified post.
Thanks for your input and info!

I've checked into it, and a couple of forums had the wrong permissions listed. I think it's fixed now, time will tell.
