Furniture manufacturers and makers of decorative laminates need to address the issue of contamination and its impact on production yields.

However hard manufacturers try it is virtually impossible to create a contamination-free factory. Dust, dirt and other debris can easily find its way into the production line and a quick wipe with a cloth is no longer a satisfactory or effective solution.

If furniture is being coated with an oil or lacquer its is essential that the surface being covered is 100% clean otherwise hickeys, blobs and other blemishes can be caused leading to wasted product. Likewise when layers of laminate are being pressed together it is vital that the plates are meticulously cleaned otherwise the debris will be trapped spoiling the appearance of the material.

The most effect way to ensure surfaces are thoroughly clean before being processed is by contact cleaning. Teknek is the global leader in this technology which uses a special elastomer roller to remove loose dry particles down to one micron in size from the material in question. The rollers make direct contact with the surface but do not harm the material. The chemical composition of the rubber rollers creates a high grab surface which attracts the debris. The contamination is then transferred to a special self-adhesive film for examination and disposal.

Teknek’s contact cleaning technology is incorporated into a number of different devices according to the application. For laminates, for example, the materials can be feed through a web or flatbed contact cleaner depending on the thickness of the laminate. Furniture manufacturers on the other hand can use Teknek’s DCR hand-held rollers to remove contamination immediately prior to coating.
